Vinyl planks are economical and durable. It is possible to install over other types of flooring directly. However, there are a few things which must be considered before this is done.
Vinyl Planks are most often installed over these floors:

Vinyl Flooring Over Wood Flooring
While vinyl planks can be installed over wood flooring, old solid hardwood can swell over time which would make direct installation over the wood difficult. Professional installers can determine the preparation this type of flooring would require prior to installation for the best finish post-installation. Free site visits can be scheduled.
Vinyl Flooring Over Concrete Flooring
As long as the concrete flooring is even and sturdy without cracks in the foundation, vinyl planks can be installed directly above without any hassle.
Vinyl Flooring Over Tile Flooring
Vinyl flooring can be installed directly over tile flooring. Cracked or missing tiles should be fixed or filled in prior to installation.
Other Considerations
Trapping moisture between vinyl flooring and its substrate may create mold and mildew since the moisture has no avenue of escape. Therefore it is important to ensure the flooring is dry prior to installation. Additionally, freshly poured concrete flooring must fully cure and dry before vinyl planks are laid above.
